Extended Construction Hours Irk Kepong Residents

Residents near the Residensi Kepongmas housing project site in Kepong Metropolitan Park, Kuala Lumpur has called on the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to pull back their approval for extended working hours at the site, reported The Star.

This is because they have been losing sleep due to the noise coming from the construction site until late night.

DBKL had granted permit to continue construction at the project beyond regular hours, which is 8am to 5pm including Sundays. As such, work at the site resume from 7pm to 5am the following Mondays to Saturdays.

“There are about 300 houses located close to the site. I am sure many of these residents are suffering the same way as I am,” said Chan Fatt Seong, chairman of Fortune Park Resident Association.

“Dust and sand also enter our houses and the lorries have damaged the roads in the neighbourhood,” he added.

Kepong Community Service Centre head Yee Poh Ping noted that while DBKL allowed the extended working hours only in February, construction round the clock at the site began about six months ago.

“The noise from the lorries going in and out of the construction site in the middle of the night is disrupting their sleep. Many senior citizens need their rest.”

If the construction is really running out of time, the contractor should have taken other measures like increasing manpower.

“Otherwise, they should compensate the buyers. Speeding up work by extending working hours and jeopardising the peace in the neighbourhood is not an option…I have complained to DBKL to pull back their approval as soon as possible,” said Yee.

The construction also contributed to air pollution, as the lorries going in and out of the project site were not washed properly. They also leave a trail of dust and sand along Jalan Metropolitan Barat.

Meanwhile, a DBKL spokesman revealed that it will look into the complaints of the residents.

“Usually it will take 10 to 14 days for us to investigate the intensity of the noise pollution. And if it is more than the permissible level, we will withdraw the approval.”
