In a bid to save the football field along Jalan Jujur in Kuala Lumpur, residents of Bandar Tun Razak (BTR) have filed a complaint with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on Tuesday (13 June) after city hall vowed to proceed with the construction of an apartment block last Thursday.
“We filed the report to MACC as we suspect there is an element of foul play in regards to the development planned on the football field,” said Zulhazmi Shariff, an attorney representing the residents, in a report by Free Malaysia Today.
He alleged that there is a discrepancy in the sale of the land to the developer as the field was still gazetted as a reserved land and it was not yet officially owned by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) when they started looking for a buyer in April 2016.
Citing a Government Gazette published on 24 November 2005, Zulhazmi pointed the football field measuring 2.098 hectares had been reserved as an open space for public use.
However, the reserved land status was rescinded on 22 December 2016 by the Federal Territory Land Executive Committee, which was headed by Chief Secretary to the government Ali Hamsa.
After revoking the reserved title, the property was given to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), under the administration of Mayor Bandar Amin Nordin, only on 4 June 2017. It was subsequently disposed to real estate developer Aset Kayamas Sdn Bhd.
“How can DBKL open the field for sale (in April) to the developer when it was not theirs to begin with?” queried Zulhazmi, noting that the property was only handed over to city hall in June 2017.
According to Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, green spaces like the Jalan Jujur football field should be preserved for the benefit of the locals. In addition, the construction of a residential development there would have a negative effect on safety and traffic.
“Kuala Lumpur will be the messiest city in the world if such uncontrolled development is pursued in the future,” she added.
Last Thursday (8 June), DBKL’s Economic Planning & Development Department Director Azmi Hamid reiterated that the proposed development of the football field into a 41-storey apartment building will continue as planned.
Dubbed as Razakmas Residency, the project will consist of low-cost houses costing RM198,000 per unit.
