In a bid to address parking space woes, the Federal Territories Ministry mulls having automated multi-storey car parks at People’s Housing Projects (PPR) in Kuala Lumpur.
In fact, a Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) study would pilot the idea at PPR Kerinchi given that it’s a high population density area.
“Although the multi-storey car parks at 12 PPRs will be made this year and next year, we plan to use a new multi-storey parking with a ‘decking’ concept which will automatically operate with the existing system to enable more efficient and easier movement of vehicles such as in Japan and [South] Korea,” said Minister, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor after the launch of the Jom Bantu Rakyat Lembah Pantai programme at PPR Kerinchi.
“We will also [be able to] increase the number of parking spaces there…if the place (PPR) already has parking spaces, we can increase it by two to three times. So far, DBKL is still evaluating which areas are suitable for this facility.”
Japan saw an annual supply of over 100,000 automated parking spaces by late-1990s, making it the heaviest user of automated multi-storey car parks.
In 2015, Singapore’s Housing Development Board rolled out the first mechanised parking system in its public housing projects.
