Bumiputra Quota System Not to Be Abolished, Says Zuraida

Housing and Local Government minister Zuraida Kamaruddin clarified that the bumiputra housing quota system’s review is not aimed at abolishing the system, reported Bernama.

She noted that the review involves a thorough study of the quota for the sale of bumiputra land, the weaknesses in the implementation of the system, including factors that cause the units to be unsold.

With the number of unsold bumiputra lots in every state numbering in the hundreds or thousands, the problem needs a swift solution.

“This is not a new thing, the issue of overhang units (built but unsold units), is being given serious attention by several state governments who view this matter as a worrying trend,” said Zuraida to dispel speculation that the ministry will abolish the quota system following news of its review.

“The short term solution, especially for housing that is built, might be to establish a release mechanism that is more effective, to ensure bumiputra status units are released into the open market after bumiputras are given sufficient chances to own them.”

In the long-term, a detailed review has to be conducted on the factors causing bumiputras not to benefit from the system.

“A holistic approach must be taken, and elements such as financial status, demographics, attitude, and the mentality of the bumiputras must be taken into consideration, and given serious attention,” explained Zuraida.

“The results of the review that will be implemented, will hopefully solve the issue of overhang units, within the bumiputra quota that is still happening on a large scale at present.”
