Sleepless over Sinkhole in Seri Kembangan

17 Dec 2018

For the past two months, Lee Swee Lim’s family have been suffering from sleepless nights as they worry about the sudden appearance of a sinkhole near their home in Jalan Kuyuh, Seri Kembangan, reported The Star.

With the damage just 0.5 m from the wall of their house, Lee revealed that water would be seen gushing out from a stream beneath the collapsed portion when it rains, while rainwater backflows from the broken drain into their home.

“We renovated our house back in 1969, and this was the first time the ground collapsed. Water enters the house when there is a downpour, and rises up to 5cm,” noted Lee.

With this, Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) will be checking on potential underground damage in parts of Seri Kembangan.

This comes as many houses within the area had built concrete slabs over streams which flowed pass their houses.

“Most streams flow pass private land which were not gazetted in the past, and no one bothered about these streams,” said Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah, who visited Lee’s family along with MPSJ councillors Tai Cheng Heng and Y.S. Wong.

“Drains were also built over the streams and years later, residents covered the drains with concrete slabs.”

MPSJ could not check if the drains covered by concrete slabs were damaged as the streams passed through private land.

A representative from MPSJ’s Engineering Department said repair works, which would be done in stages, will commence next week.

“We will remove the broken concrete slabs first and focus on 20m of the affected area. We will check if there are damages underground before going further,” said Ean Yong.

“The drain could have given way due to the weight of the concrete slabs over it, but we have to determine what the problem is.”

MPSJ would need to remove extended zinc roofs installed by Lee’s family in order that the equipment may be brought in for repair works
