KPKT Eyes Syncing Affordable Housing Schemes in One Programme

Pavither 24 May 2018

To avoid overlaps, the Housing and Local Government (KPKT) ministry mulls synchronising all public affordable housing schemes, including PR1MA, under one programme, reported The Edge.

According to KPKT’s newly sworn-in minister Zuraida Kamaruddin, centralising all resources under one affordable housing programme will enable the ministry to reach out to more people, hence, helping the right people achieve homeownership.

“Although PR1MA is not under KPKT, however, there is a possibility for us to propose to the cabinet to synchronise everything together instead of having two separate programmes which shared the same target.”

In its election manifesto, Pakatan Harapan proposed to establish a National Affordable Housing Council which will combine the functions of various agencies.

Chaired by the prime minister, the council will oversee affordable housing construction matters, coordinate a unified and open database on unsold affordable housing while organising a rent-to-own scheme for the M40 and B40 groups.

Commenting on the difficulty faced by homebuyers in securing mortgage loans, Zuraida explained that there is a need to review the country’s overall housing programme in order to identify effective ways to make homes affordable.

“Before this, I did have some informal discussion with the economic affairs minister [Datuk Seri Azmin Ali]; he did mention that Bank Negara will need to be more relaxed in their lending guidelines,” she revealed.

Zuraida, however, said there is a need to find a win-win solution in which homebuyers and banks can both benefit.
