Land Owner Silent On Highland Towers Redevelopment Plans

3 Jul 2018

The owner of the abandoned Highland Towers project has not yet submitted a development proposal for the site, said the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) in a report by The Edge.

“We have yet to receive any development proposal from the site owner,” said MPAJ President Abdul Hamid Hussain.

“We will first have to prepare information and documents before any decision can be made on what kind of development is suitable to take place there.”

Asked on the site’s stability, he said that a detailed research will be carried once a redevelopment proposal is submitted. “At present, there has been no incidents or signs of slope failure.”

However, the Mineral and Geoscience Department said the former prime site is at risk of further landslides. Thus, only low impact projects like recreation and tourism should be constructed there.

However, the authorities are considering to build low-cost housing there for families earning RM3,900 and below per month, as well as a recreational and tourism facilities.

In fact, Housing Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin created a 10-agency committee to spearhead the redevelopment as well as buy the land and tackle all existing legal issues.

Notably, one of the three buildings in Highland Towers collapsed due a major landslide, leading to the death of 48 people, in December 1993. As for the remaining two condo blocks, these need to be demolished as these were found to be structurally unstable, and their residents had been evacuated a long time ago.

The civil cases against those responsible for the Highland Towers tragedy was also dropped due to an out-of-court settlement in 2004. Under the deal, Arab-Malaysian Finance (now known as AmFinance) agreed to pay RM52 million to 139 residents and units owners in Highland Towers.

Furthermore, the residents and owners relinquished their right over their properties in Highland Towers.
