About 200 residents from the historic Portuguese Settlement in Bandar Hilir have protested the reclamation activities for the Melaka Gateway project, reported Guang Ming Daily.

The Chinese daily revealed that the residents carried several coffins to the office of the project’s master developer, KAJ Development Sdn Bhd.

Some protesters proceeded to lie inside the coffins while others sprinkled them with sand.

This is to depict the “developer throwing sand into their rice bowls with the reclamation activities”, they said.

It was previously reported that KAJ Development had brushed aside concerns that the RM43 billion seafront project may be shelved by saying that works on the project is on track.

The company has revealed plans to request for a meeting with key stakeholders, like the Port Klang Authority and transport ministry, to present the latest updates on the Melaka Gateway project.

“We are continuing our engagements with key stakeholders such as meeting the chief minister of Melaka and the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP),” said Melaka Gateway founder and KAJ chief executive officer Datuk Michelle Ong.
