Affordable Homes A Good Property Investment, Says Dr Mahathir

With property prices expected to increase over the years, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said owning an affordable home serves as a good property investment that is very beneficial in the long term, reported the New Straits Times.

“Over the years, the price of affordable homes will increase. Someday we might be able to purchase a more expensive house than the affordable home that we currently have,” he said during the launch of National Community Policy (NCP) on Sunday (17 February).

The event was also attended by his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamed Ali, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari, Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin and other members of the Cabinet.

As such, the government is committed at building one million affordable homes in the next 10 years to help the people acquire their own homes at a much lower price, he said.

“Affordable homes for the people must be comfortable despite the price and must be equipped with adequate facilities…This is the government’s intention. We want the people to live comfortably,” explained Dr Mahathir.

“There is no meaning living in a developed country if the people are suffering. They see the country’s development progress but cannot enjoy it.”

He revealed that the government will work with private sector players to materialise its aim of developing one million affordable housing units.

“At some places, the government will help to build the affordable homes, while at some places the private sector will help to do so,” said Dr Mahathir.

“I believe that the private sector is concerned about the matter and ready to invest in building affordable homes for the people.”
