Construction of 1m affordable houses in 10 years feasible, REHDA

The Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association Malaysia (REHDA) believes that the government’s goal of building one million affordable housing units within 10 years is achievable.

Vice-president Datuk N K Tong, however, asked the people to give the new government some time, reported Bernama.

“One million (affordable) homes in 10 years is achievable if there is enough resolve and I think that this government has that,” he said at the press conference for the World Class Sustainable Cities (WCSC) 2019 conference.

“However, I wouldn’t expect the first 100,000 homes to be delivered within the first year, because from a practical point of view, the gestation period for the development can take up to four years.”

He revealed that the government has been working with stakeholders, including the house buyers association, various government bodies and developers.

“If it is well coordinated, it will be achievable,” said Tong.

WCSC aims to provide an inclusive, aspirational and constructive platform, as well as a strategic networking arena for engineers, architects, city managers, planners, and other stakeholders.

The event is jointly organised by the Malaysian Institute of Planners, the Institute of Architects Malaysia and REHDA KL.
