The Merdeka 118 tower is now 50% completed, reaching 111 floors before the enforcement of the government’s Movement Control Order (MCO) on 18 March.
Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) President and Group CEO Jalil Rasheed said that while construction works at the tower was halted during the MCO’s first three phases, preparations had already been made to resume work this week, reported the New Straits Times.
“We have got seven floors more to go on the central core structure. There could be an additional two to three months extension of the construction period,” he said at a virtual press conference on the 2019 annual report of PNB and its 2020-2022 strategic plan.
“That includes the period no work was allowed under the MCO as well as an adjustment phase that we’re currently undergoing right now.”

He revealed that PNB would stagger staff hours at the construction site in order to manage the crowd as well as practice social distancing. It would also adopt strict guidelines on temperature screening on workers.
“Hence, I guess it will take some time to have an operating pattern and rhythm. But we aim to catch up as much as possible with the time lost.”
Commenting on construction materials, Jalil explained that most of the materials were locally sourced while those sourced overseas had already been in storage.
“It would be enough for us to do work over the next six months or so. So, we can start work immediately,” he added.
PNB Group Chairman Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz said the project is expected to be completed by late 2021.
“We will take up 17 floors and we will be operating four floors of the observation deck which are going to be very exciting where you can see most of Kuala Lumpur. There will be many exhibits there on the four top floors,” said Zeti.
