PM Ismail Sabri To Inform Cabinet On Proposal To Revive HSR Project

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is set to brief the Cabinet this Friday regarding the outcome of his meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong including the proposal to revive the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail (HSR) project.

According to Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong, the fresh proposal on the HSR project was the result of discussions between the two prime ministers during their meeting on 29 November 2021, reported Bernama.

He noted, however, that no timeframe was set relevant to the new proposal for the HSR project, adding that only an official statement from the two leaders was issued.

“To date, as work on this is being implemented by the Economic Planning Unit (in the Prime Minister’s Department), after this, whatever direction will be determined by the Prime Minister, and the outcome of the four-eye discussion will be announced to the Cabinet,” he said as quoted by Bernama.

The transport minister made the statement during a winding up debate on the Supply Bill 2022 (Budget 2022) at the committee stage in the Dewan Rakyat.

On 29 November, Lee has said that Singapore is open to fresh proposals coming from Malaysia on the HSR project even as the two countries had previously agreed to terminate the rail project.

The Singapore prime minister added that the transport ministries from both countries will discuss the matter and that the city-state will be looking forward to getting more details from Malaysia.

“Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob) has proposed to revive discussions on the HSR. I responded to the PM that Singapore and Malaysia had previously reached an agreement to terminate the HSR project, and this had been settled amicably,” said Lee.
