PR1MA BIM Guide to ensure uniformity across housing projects

Perumahan Rakyat 1Malaysia (PR1MA) has launched the PR1MA Building Information Modelling (BIM) Guide to ensure uniformity and consistent development across all its housing projects, reported the media.

According to PR1MA chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Mutalib Alias, the use of BIM technology is part of PR1MA’s initiative at ensuring that prices of PR1MA homes are lower compared to prices of homes located within the vicinity.

“PR1MA is a government agency that not only focuses on providing homes to those who need them, but also has a long-term vision of improving the country’s construction industry,” said PR1MA chief operating officer Aminuddin Abdul Manaf.

Aminuddin said the use of BIM will address problems normally encountered during construction and design development, noting that most of the problems on-site are due to inefficiencies as well as coordination of drawings.

He added: “I believe BIM will take a bit of work and a lot of commitment in the beginning, but I foresee down the road, in about a year or two, once we have achieved our standardisation in terms of design and specification, [BIM] will be a great help to a lot of people, including all the consultants and all the developers that are working with us.”

Notably, BIM allows professionals to analyse the project’s physical characteristics, including its function during the entire construction process. It also helps improve the accuracy and efficiency of projects and enhance collaboration among project manager, developer, engineer, quantity surveyor and architect for resources and cost management.

In fact, the technology has been used in various countries including Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong.

“The BIM technology will ensure that construction costs are accurate prior to construction, with almost no run-offs. This will ensure that there is no wastage of materials and that the development projects adhere to the stipulated construction schedule,” said PR1MA BIM assistant vice-president KC Ho, who also serves as PR1MA BIM Guide adviser.
