According to the National Transformation Programme Annual Report 2015 prepared by the Performance Management Delivery Unit (Pemandu), the Greater Kuala Lumpur/ Klang Valley (GKL/KV) National Key Economic Area (NKEA) aspires to be the among the top economic and livable cities in the world by 2020, reported Bernama.
The city is expected to house 10 million inhabitants by 2020, from six million in 2010. This created the need for a sustainable development that can tackle the challenges of rapid urbanization.
Understanding the need to enhance the rail networking in Klang Valley, the government had invested RM32 billion to develop the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line 1. This will benefit almost 1.2 million people, stated the report.
Meanwhile, the MRT Line 2 scheduled for completion in 2022 is expected to serve almost two million people, improving the connectivity in the Greater Kuala Lumpur / Klang Valley vicinity.
Moreover, the report further stated that the National Key Results Areas (NKRA) Urban Public Transport had also increased networking via initiatives, namely Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) Commuter, Light Rail Transit (LRT) Kelana Jaya and the LRT Extension Project (LEP).
Besides that, there are also initiatives taken to increase bus services such as Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and GO-KL.
