BRT Iskandar to cost less than expected

The Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) is looking forward to implementing the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Iskandar Malaysia, which is expected not to cost more than RM3 billion.

Even though IRDA has yet to receive the finalised cost, at the moment the expected cost for building the line, operation costs (including buses) and miscellaneous costs are predicted not to exceed RM3 billion.

The BRT system is expected to cover almost 90% of the Iskandar Malaysia region and will be developed in three phases over time. The first phase of the project is scheduled to commence in the year 2020.

Currently, IRDA is in the midst of planning and getting approval for the financial and engineering module of the subsequent phases.

BRT Iskandar is a public-private collaborative project and is expected to be funded by both parties. The government is expected to finance the infrastructures. Meanwhile, the operations will be funded by the participating private sector.

IRDA will give priority to existing private companies based in Iskandar Malaysia, especially bus operators with a proven track record.
