Talks on Third Penang Bridge Suspended

According to the Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, discussions for the proposed third bridge in Penang was suspended as the state government failed to submit the required documents within the deadline.

As such, the application is no longer considered urgent and is now classified as keep-in-view.

The final deadline to submit the initial required documents was last Friday, and despite four reminders, the Penang government still failed to adhere to the given time.

Previously, the Penang government stated that the studies costing up to RM305 million was 83% completed three months ago and was nearing completion.

According to Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, the state government has already sent the necessary documents to the ministry, together with an application approval directly to the prime minister’s office. Yet, the ministry claims that they have yet to receive the documents.

On a separate note, Lim had also sent a letter to request for a date to meet Fadilah, to discuss further regarding the proposed project, which replaces the undersea tunnel project. According to him, the state government will be able to build the bridge costing about RM2 billion, without imposing toll to its users.

“The reason is still unknown as to why the state government repeatedly failed to submit the documents within the given time frame. Thus, the ministry is unable to proceed further or approve the project without receiving the relevant documents,” she added.

With this, a letter was sent to the Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng on the ministry’s decision to classify this project under keep-in-view and not urgent.
