As a recognition of his contribution to Malaysian sports, property developer Orlando Holdings wants to gift national shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei with an RM1.5 million condominium unit.
Orando managing director Datuk Eng Wei Chun revealed that the 1,100 sq ft unit at the planned LaVile condominium project in Taman Maluri will be given as a surprise gift to the three-time Olympic silver medallist in the hope of encouraging young Malaysians to excel in sports.
“I wanted to give him a surprise. He has done so much for the country,” he said.
Notably, the three-bedroom unit will be fully furnished, while the 38-storey condominium project is set to be completed in 2020.
“At the moment, we don’t have a badminton court at the condominium. Maybe we can ask the architect to build at least one court, which we can name after Datuk Lee Chong Wei,” said Eng.
On why they chose Lee, Eng explained that Lee had shown interest in acquiring the unit prior to leaving the country for the Rio Olympics when he visited the LaVile showroom in Cheras. Lee was also considered as the face of Malaysia in international sporting events.
“There will be other chances for future Olympians. I see this as a corporate social responsibility,” he said.
“We want the country to have a bright future and be harmonious. Sports is doing that. This is my way of enhancing our sports for a brighter future for Malaysia.”
Aside from the condominium unit, Lee will also receive an Osim uDiva Classic Massage Sofa, a Proton Suprima S 1.6L Turbo Premium and RM637,888 from the National Sports Council and the Badminton Association of Malaysia.
He will also get a monthly pension of RM3,000 for the rest of his life.
