747 Squatters Permitted to Stay in Selangor

4 Apr 2017

Since 2008, the state government of Selangor has allowed 747 families squatting on public land to legally reside there, reported The Star.

This was said by Selangor Housing Committee Chairman Datuk Iskandar Abdul Samad in response to a query on the state’s squatter issues by Selat Kelang MP Dr Halimah Ali.

Iskandar said the 747 households are located in Kuala Selangor district and Klang municipality, including settlements such as Tanah Mardi, Kampung Sri Sentosa, Kampung Jawa Estate and Kampung Sungai Sireh.

However, he shared that there are still 2,542 cases of squatting that have not yet been resolved. Nonetheless, the state would uphold its policy of listening to all parties, with the squatters included.

“The state will identify the problems the settlers face before deciding if the squatters’ homes will be demolished or if they are allowed to continue staying on site.”

“The state also takes into account the settlers’ welfare and financial ability. So if the state decides to demolish new squatter homes, the relocation for existing squatter homes or cases that have gone to court will be considered accordingly,” he said.

For qualified families, Rumah Selangorku low-cost homes will be offered, noted Iskandar, adding that there 132,916 applicants for the affordable housing scheme to date.

In particular, 65 percent of the 21,510 applications for Rumah Selangorku submitted between January 2014 and February 2017 were approved. However, 35 percent failed to meet the loan eligibility set by banks.

“Due to the high demand, the state government will continue this endeavour and urge developers to speed up the construction of Rumah Selangorku through periodical monitoring by the Selangor Housing and Property Board (LPHS),” noted Iskandar, adding that the state will also prove incentives to developers to spur them to build low-cost homes.

Among the affordable homes available around Selangor are:

Rumah Selangorku CyberSouth, Dengkil

Tamarind Suites, Cyberjaya

Dream City, Seri Kembangan
