Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor clarified that the government has never forgotten its responsibility of providing Kuala Lumpur citizens with recreational facilities.
His statement came after several opposition KL MPs initiated a petition calling for the draft Kuala Lumpur City Plan 2020 to be gazetted alleging that the development within the city is out of control while public land are being allocated for commercial uses.
In describing the criticism as an attempt to discredit the ministry, Tengku Adnan said the lawmakers “do not know what we are doing here – they keep on telling the rakyat that the mayor and I are giving out a lot of development projects in Kuala Lumpur without thinking or caring about the environment”.
“In fact, we are the first city in Malaysia to have changed all our light fittings on the streets to control carbon emissions…We always make sure to put a park in places that can be made green,” he said at the launch of Phase Two of Taman Pudu Ulu in Cheras, which offers recreational facilities for the public.
Completed in November 2017, Phase One of Taman Pudu Ulu spans across 12.5ha of land, featuring a guardhouse, building maintenance office, gazebo, parking lots, toilets, field, a children’s playground and surau, reported The Star.
The RM11 million Phase Two, on the other hand, includes recreational facilities such as a wading pool for children, canopied plaza ideal for activities like aerobics, a stage for performances, decking and boardwalk.
To save costs, DBKL officers carried out the planning and development of the landscaping project without the involvement of consultants, said Tengku Adnan.
“I ask for park users to jointly maintain the facilities so that we are able to enjoy its benefits together,” he added.
DBKL, with the help of Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute, also provided a small community garden, which was handed over to Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, chairman of the Friends of the Pudu Ulu Park Association.
“We want members of the association to play an active role in the park including through the planting of more trees,” said Lee.
“I have also suggested building additional toilets and for life guards to be provided for the safety of children in the wading pool.”
Lee also asked DBKL for enforcement within the area to prevent snatch thefts, vandalism and other undesirable activities.
