Residents Want Sustainable Development in Taman Rimba Kiara

5 Jun 2017

Experts and nearby residents are opposed to a massive project at Taman Rimba Kiara in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) as it would not only significantly increase the area’s population density, but would also destroy a public park.

According to a notice from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) that has since been removed, the development will consist of eight towers 42 to 54 storeys high containing a total of 1,766 service apartments and a 29-storey block of social housing.

While the residents are not against the 350 units of social housing meant for former rubber tappers and their families, they object to the huge number of service apartments.

Moreover, it will be sited on a public park, formerly a 12-acre nursery in Taman Kiara, which have been originally envisioned as Malaysia’s botanical gardens and first national arboretum, a place to research on trees and flora.

Experts said that the authorities should learn to incorporate nature in their developments, and properties close to greenery are highly valued by people. For instance, apartments facing New York’s Central Park are among the most sought-after in the US city.

“We support development but developments must be done sustainably. Architects are an integral part in the planning process and we are concerned when a public park is being turned into a very high density development, said Malaysian Institute of Architects Deputy President Sarly Adre Sarkum.

Moreover, if the project proceeds as planned, the area’s population density would rise by leaps and bounds from 74 to 979 per acre, substantially affecting the residents of TTDI, which is already a mature estate.

Given that it will add over 2,000 units, the project’s impact will not just be limited to nearby residents. But under Rule 5 of Planning Development Rules of 1994, only registered land owners with properties within 200 metres may object to the development.

Among developments in Klang Valley are:

1. The Riyang Condominium

2. The Luxe, KLCC
