Jinjang Squatters Counting on Gov’s Promise of Housing

15 Jun 2017

Around 70 residents in Jinjang Utara, particularly those living along Jalan Tebing Utara and Jalan Tebing Selatan, are wishing that the government could relocate them to People’s Housing Project (PPR) within the vicinity, reported The Star.

This is because their current houses are already dilapidated and the government land where they have been squatting for over 40 years is not a good place to raise a family.

“My family, friends and workplace are here but at the same time I want to move out of my home as it is no longer conducive to live here,” said Yee Siew Heong, who has resided in the area since birth.

“Our houses are breaking apart and the roofs are leaking. It is time to move out.”

Another resident who hopes to get a nearby PPR unit is Tan Geok Hua. She revealed that there is a huge monsoon drain in front of her house that is filled with garbage thrown by people.

“It is now a breeding ground for mosquitoes,” noted Tan.

According to Yee Poh Ping, Head of the Kepong Community Service Centre, the residents were supposed to have been relocated into public housing by the authorities in 2006.

“They were given notices to relocate but the move was delayed due to the lack of public housing units.” Given the delay, many residents move out on their own, with only 15 houses remaining out of 70, he said.

Nevertheless, Poh Ping revealed that he has talked with officials from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and asked them to find a home for these residents at nearby PPR projects, with the authorities pledging to do so after Hari Raya.

“The residents were promised units more than 10 years ago and it is time they get them,” he added.
