State govt to continue maintenance of Petaling Jaya PPR

25 Apr 2017

The state government of Selangor pledged to resume maintenance work at the People’s Housing Project (PPR) Lembah Subang 1 in Petaling Jaya to save the dilapidated flats, reported The Star.

The state government, via Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), managed the flats since 2002 but ceased recently after the Federal Government, which is the landowner, announced plans to takeover maintenance of the PPR last year.

In anticipation of the takeover, which was set in January, MBPJ stopped all cleaning works at the flats, also known as PPR Taman Putra Damai.

The signing, however, was delayed as the Federal Government did not agree to some conditions set by the state government, particularly the repayment of RM60.6 million in expenses incurred by MBPJ.

“We will continue with the maintenance of the flats until the Federal Government has made a decision,” Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali told PPR residents during a meeting. “We do not want the place to deteriorate further.”

Also present at the meeting were Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohd Azizi Mohd Zain, state Housing, Building Management and Urban Living Committee chairman Datuk Iskandar Abdul Samad, Subang MP Sivarasa Rasiah as well as MBPJ councillors.

Iskandar revealed that the residents had agreed to work together with the state government for the betterment of the community.

Notably, the residents agreed to pay their rent on time, considering that only 20 percent were paying rent following last year’s controversy between the state and Federal governments.

With the inadequate funds, MBPJ’s maintenance works for the PPR took a downturn, said Iskandar.

Moreover, a special committee set up by the state government, comprising MBPJ councillors and officers as well as Kota Damansara state coordinator Radzlan Jalaludin, will hold frequent meetings with residents.
