Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has reiterated his pledge to provide more low-cost housing for low- and middle-income Malaysians, reported Bernama.
“From the time I took over the leadership of the country in 2009, we assessed what the people wanted and realised that they wanted affordable houses. As such, we committed ourselves to building one million affordable houses in the whole country.
“For me, property ownership is more meaningful than equity ownership for an individual because land is a substantial asset of value to our families.”
He told this to reporters when visiting the Casa Anggun housing project at Sungai Nibong in George Town, Penang on Thursday (17 August).
Phase II of the development consists of 340 medium-cost houses with build ups ranging from 800 sq ft to 900 sq ft. These units are priced from RM324,000, making them 20 percent more affordable compared to similar homes available in the market. However, all units in the project have been taken-up.
According to PM Najib, building more affordable homes is a top priority of his administration, but this requires cooperation from various government agencies, like the Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda)and JKP Sdn Bhd in the case of Penang.
In particular, he revealed that they are looking into JKP’s application to construct 10,000 units of low-cost homes on two land parcels in Gelugor and Batu Maung, George Town that are owned by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry.
“If the Cabinet gives its approval, the project will become a reality. This is what we are doing. We want all groups to benefit,” noted Najib.
Furthermore, Penang Federal Action Council Chairman Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Osma hopes that the residential project would be approved by the federal government.
