Taman Rimba Kiara to be Further Destroyed: Highway to be Built Through the Park

Pavither 27 Feb 2018

Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) plan to construct an elevated access road from Jalan Wan Kadir to an ongoing controversial project in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) will destroy a large portion of the Taman Rimba Kiara park.

“Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor kept saying the development will not touch Taman Rimba Kiara but the facts suggest otherwise,” said Save Taman Rimba Kiara Group coordinator Leon Koay.

“The road will take at least 0.52ha or 10 percent of the green footprint. There will also be a relocation of the existing carpark that sits on Lot PT9244 to part of Taman Rimba Kiara.”

Notably, TTDI residents are objecting to the controversial project as it will lead to the destruction of large swathes of green spaces in Taman Rimba Kiara and it will increase the area’s population density from 74 persons per acre to 979 persons per acre.

The 2,116-unit development on Lot PT9244 comprises a 29-storey affordable housing block with 350 units and six blocks of 42- and 52-storey luxury serviced apartments with 1,766 units.

Previously, TTDI residents applied for a judicial review with the High Court to invalidate the development order granted by DBKL for the controversial project

The residents also wanted the court to stop the construction work while the case is being heard, but the application for the stay order was rejected by Kuala Lumpur High Court Judge Datuk Wira Kamalludin Md last December.

The High Court is expected to hear the application for a judicial review on 18 April 2018.

Meanwhile, TTDI residents claim that in DBKL’s planning database, the area of Taman Rimba Kiara park (Lot 55118) has been divided into three sections and reduced from 25 acres originally to just 6.7 acres.

“The top section (12 acres) is alienated for commercial purposes, middle section (7 acres) is for residential purposes while the lowest section (6.7 acres) remained as open space,” noted Koay.

Furthermore, TTDI Residents Association (RA) chairman Abdul Hafiz Abu Bakar noted that some property developers have submitted several applications to convert TTDI land to commercial purposes.

“For example, there is a proposal to build a two blocks of seven-storey shop lots and offices totalling up to 72 units on that land that now houses Tadika Diyana in Lorong Datuk Sulaiman 1, which holds a residential with institutional land title,” he added.
