Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has advised longhouse residents in Jinjang Utara to pay their outstanding arrears for their current homes. Otherwise, they will not be allowed to buy flats at People’s Housing Project (PPR) in Seri Aman, reported The Star.
“If they cannot pay off their rent and utility arrears, it is unlikely they can service monthly bank loans. So they can reapply to rent units instead,” said DBKL’s Housing Management and Community Development Department Deputy Director Mohd Muzammer Jamaluddin during the balloting session at PPR Seri Aman on Monday (16 July).
At presents, 150 families at Jinjang Utara longhouse have not been permitted to move into their PPR units, either for failing to settle their rental and utility arrears while living in the longhouse for the last 27 years, or for having issues in their paperwork and housing loan application. For instance, some families failed to include the names of their second-generation kin along with the original longhouse settlers.
Previously, the longhouse residents were promised to get homes at the newly built PPR Seri Aman. These flats cost RM35,000 each, and the aspiring home owners can pay this amount in cash or use their EPF Account Two. They may also avail of Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan’s rent-to-own scheme. But their adult children are only allowed to rent units at PPR Seri Aman.
According to Jinjang Utara DBKL Zone A Public Housing Residents Association Chairman Mohamed Nawaz Koya, they are currently helping those with financial problems buy a flat in PPR Seri Aman.
“I have met with DBKL Socio-economic Development executive director Datuk Ibrahim Yusoff and there is a plan to include the residents’ outstanding debt in their monthly instalment for the PPR units until the debt is fully paid. However, no decision has been made yet.”
“There is a group of residents who refused to pay the monthly rental for their longhouse units as they claim there is an agreement that the residents are not required to pay rent after living at the longhouse for 10 years.”
“But there was never such an agreement and now they are facing problems with the relocation,” he added.
