The Housing Ministry is looking into the price of People’s Housing Project (PPR) units if the minimum size of these affordable dwellings will be increased, reported The Edge.
In June, Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said her agency intends to launch the National Community Policy this month, under which there is a proposal to increase the PPR flat sizes from 600 sq ft currently to at least 900 sq ft.
“I do not want the PPR living quarters and those for the B40 group to be small like birds’ nests,” she said back then.
But during a recent Parliamentary session on Tuesday (31 July), Zuraida said there is a need to review the price of the larger flats due to their higher construction costs and the subsidies that will be shouldered by authorities.
“We are very careful in terms of price to ensure it will not be wasteful,” she said in response to a query from Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar on why there is a need to build bigger PPR units and the effect of this move on the price.
Zuraida explained that her ministry listens to the wants of Malaysians, especially families with many household members who want to live in larger and comfortable houses.
