Residents Sleepless over Large Sinkhole

17 Jan 2019

After many sleepless nights, residents of luxury semi-detached bungalows in Bandar Sri Damansara, Petaling Jaya wanted to know the action taken by the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) over the large sinkhole that appeared near the entrance of their gated community.

This comes as no repair works can be seen at the site.

According to them, around 60m of Jalan Persiaran Meranti gave way following a heavy downpour at the end of November 2018, reported The Star.

Prior to the 6pm incident, rain water streamed down from a nearby elevated road, which might have caused the sinkhole, said Airie Joint Management Body chairman Jason Lai.

“Some guards who saw the incident said the road caved in within seconds,” he said. “Since then, workers from (MBPJ have been stationed on duty around the clock just metres away from our guard house.”

Lai noted that Jalan Persiaran Meranti is connected to SMK Bandar Sri Damansara (2). As such, school visitors “can no longer use this road and it has also affected a Rapid KL bus service”.

In fact, the sinkhole had already spread into parts of the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) near the Airie gated and guarded community.

With the worsening state of the sinkhole, residents are concerned that a billboard located near the site might topple on the NKVE.

“MBPJ failed to give any constructive feedback on the repair work. Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Elizabeth Wong’s representative also visited the site but we have not received any feedback,” said Lai.

“It has been more than eight weeks and we do not see any sign of repairs being done.”

Meanwhile, an MBPJ spokesman explained that the were aware of the residents’ problem and had called for open tender bidding for the road works.

“We must have an open tender bidding because it is a big project,” said the spokesman. “Submissions for the project will close by Jan 24.”

He revealed that the repair work will include drainage repair and slope strengthening works.
