BRS houses to keep spirit of original villages: Architect

Residents of the four villages distressed by the impoundment of the Bengoh Dam will get new resettlement houses that provide the same comfort as their original homes.

“We did the planning based on the needs and requirements of the villagers. Four zones are created, one for each village. This is done as the villagers still want to retain the identities of their original villages,” said Grace Lau, Overall Architectural Consultant for the Bengoh Resettlement Scheme (BRS) and Director of the Sim, Odita and Muhammad Architects Sdn Bhd.

“We came up with an initial master plan way back in 2008 but after several rounds of negotiations it was finally approved by the relevant authorities last year.”

The government has earmarked 35 acres of land for the BRS commercial needs, gradually transforming the area into a township.

“There are also additional housing lots should there be expansion in the future with regards to extended families. As you can see, this resettlement scheme is very well-planned, to address the needs of the settlers.”

Accroding to Ngu Toh Chang of Barueast Architects Sdn Bhd who is also a consultant architect for BRS, the structures of the 204 houses used reinforced concrete (RC) so as not to compromise quality.

The ground floor of the 700 sq ft house can also be extended for more rooms, he added.

Naim, the project’s main contractor, will also be building facilities such as an Anglican church, a common community hall, priest houses and a SIB chapel.

Meanwhile, Jeffery Dickson Sandom, Project Manager of Naim, said the whole project is set to be completed in June with the settlers moving in following the attainment of the occupation permit and the approval of the facilities.
