New committee to speed up home allocation

By Farah Wahida:

A new Selection Process Committee will be set up to ramp up the allocation process of homes to eligible purchasers, according to Jagdeep Singh Deo, Chairman of the State Housing, and Town and Country Planning Committee.

“This committee will oversee the building of units by the developers from the beginning right until they reach the hands of purchasers,” he said. It will also come up with recommendations on how to improve the effectiveness of the allocation process, based on a review of the present mechanism used.

“We are also looking at the time frame,” he added, noting that a lot of applicants have been waiting for so long but have yet to receive their units.

“We want to look into the whole process, identify its weaknesses and propose how to make the system better.”

Jagdeep Singh hoped for the committee to be formed early next month, after the state executive council meeting. Relevant stakeholders such as from the Real Estate and Housing Development Association (Rehda) are eyed to be part of the committee.

Meanwhile, Penang Rehda chairman Datuk Jerry Chan said the association fully supports the formation of the committee.
