Robbers target Penang hillside homes

25 Jun 2013

Owners of landed hillside properties in Penang should improve the security of their homes as there had been four break-ins at such houses last month, according to Balik Pulau OCPD Supt Mohd Hatta Mohd Zain.

Home owners should also be extra careful as the robberies were carried out by only one group, he said. Of the four break-ins, three happened at Taman Sungai Ara, with RM44,000 worth of items stolen.

“We suspect that these robberies were conducted by three or four Indonesians,” he told reporters after the launch of the SP Setia auxiliary police.

So far, no incidents of robberies were recorded at Taman Sungai Ara after the police launched an operation codenamed Ops Rantau.

“However, we suspect they may have switched their target to houses in the Batu Ferringhi area as there was one break-in there last month,” noted Hatta.

As such, he is urging home owners to install security systems such as alarms, door grilles and CCTV cameras.

“It is also advisable to have dogs, as they can alert the occupants of any intruders,” he added.
