Residents of Taman Desa are unhappy over the ear-splitting noise that they have to contend with after substructural works on a nearby project commenced in November. Among the worst affected, are the folks in Desa 8, Tiara Faber and Desa 1 Residences, the condominiums closest to the construction site.
Notably, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) allowed the developer to carry out construction works from 7 am to 7 pm every day except Sundays. But residents said that the builder is violating this schedule as they are suffering from the horrible noise late at night and during dawn.
As such, around 100 residents protested outside the construction site and recently submitted a document with their demands to the property developer.
According to K.Y Khong, one of the residents of Tiara Faber, they want city hall to look into the present working hours in the construction site, considering that it’s near several condos.
“We also learnt that there was an application to increase the working hours and we want DBKL to know that we object to it.”
“The contractor should also take every measure needed to reduce the noise level which includes finding a more suitable piling method instead of the current noisy bore piles, which are suspected to be ill maintained due to the excessive noise it makes,” he said.
Moreover, the roads within the vicinity are being damaged by the ongoing construction and the developer has failed to implement road safety measures.
“Heavy vehicles are moving in and out of the site. The narrow roads surrounding the site are showing signs of stress. There is also no traffic marshal to guide traffic and I am worried this situation will worsen, especially when more building materials are transported into the site as work progresses and the adjacent school reopens,” Khong noted.
Another local, Valerie Low, revealed that the ongoing construction is negatively impacting the health of many people living in the vicinity.
“It is not only the noise, but the dust and fumes are also affecting our quality of life here. Many are complaining that they feel miserable and unwell due to disrupted sleep and pollution.”
“This is the holiday season but the people here are not going to enjoy their time at home,” she explained. Hence, city hall should have disapproved the project as well as the long working hours.
Meanwhile, Save Taman Desa pro tempore Committee Chairman Frank Yeh said that they are currently assessing the noise levels and will include it in the complaints to be submitted to DBKL and other relevant agencies.
“We would like to reiterate that we are not against development but are only against unsustainable ones. There are 13 projects coming up in Taman Desa that are going to double the population in a couple of years but there is no proper plan to upgrade the infrastructure and utilities.”
As such, he is urging residents to oppose overdevelopment, as it could turn their area into a slum.
