Cheras MP Tan Kok has called on the Federal Territories Ministry to take a clear stand on a new Kuala Lumpur City Plan to allow for more orderly development, as reported by Free Malaysia Today.
Tan revealed that he has asked city mayor Mohd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz during a meeting on “what they are planning to do and if they are planning to renew the city”.
“The answer we got was that they will improve and fine-tune the Kuala Lumpur City Plan 2020 and call it City Plan 2040 or 2050. They haven’t started but they said they will begin soon,” he said.
“The existing plan is obviously no longer feasible as the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) is not in the plan and they have already begun building the second (MRT) line…When we asked, the answer we got was ‘we have not gazetted but we also have not cancelled’ the plan. What kind of answer is that?”
He also questioned the mayor regarding land usage issue, which is allegedly “getting out of hand”.
“There are small pieces of land that have been sold to developers as commercial land, but after a while, the developers would convert them for residential purpose to make more gains,” said Tan.
“This has enraged the public as these plans keep changing without the public being informed.”
Moreover, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) had allegedly sold 45 plots of prime land below their market value over the past four years. He noted that the lots were sold not through open tender.
“If these pieces of land were put up for sale in open tender, their prices would have rocketed. The question is, why were they not sold via open tender?”
“The excuse given was that the prices were given by the Valuation and Property Services Department, but that is very questionable.
Launched in May 2008, the draft City Plan 2020 – on which the government spent RM30 million to produce – was initially set to be gazetted in 2012. It was, however, delayed to February 2013 due to land usage issues and objections.
