Perak is set to see the rise of another tourism destination with the completion of the Ipoh Shoe City project in 2026, revealed Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
First announced in 2009, the project – which will be nestled on a 10.8ha land within the Pengkalan Light Industries Park – has already started.
Lee Min Choy, President of the Perak Footwear Industry Association (PFIA), noted that the project will feature 128 factories, 18 shophouses, a convention hall and a hotel.
Set to be completed in five years, the convention hall will have “an exhibition centre, museum, hall, restaurants, shops and also a shoe academy, which will be the only one in the country,” he said.
“All locally made, internationally branded shoes will be exhibited here,” said Zambry at the groundbreaking ceremony for the project’s convention hall.
“You’ll be surprised to learn that some famous shoe brands are made right here in Bukit Merah.”
Specialising in making shoes, Zambry noted that the experienced manufacturers in Perak have “transformed from a cottage industry into a small and medium industry”.
He revealed that Perak’s footwear industry generates around RM60 million in revenue annually.
“I hope they can continue to grow and spur the economy by generating more revenue for the state.”
In 2014, DSG Shuez City Sdn Bhd and PFIA signed an agreement to develop the Shoe City project.
Zambry had come up with the idea for the project following a visit to Bukit Merah’s cottage industry in 2009.
