The Federal Territories Ministry is considering to install other safety measures in People’s Housing Projects (PPR) and homes for civil servants (PA) aside from setting up nets and concrete slabs to prevent injuries and deaths from falling debris.
“The Ministry is carrying out studies and other suggestions on physical barriers, which may be determined as a new criterion or condition in PPR areas,” said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Executive Director for project management Datuk Mahadi Che Ngah.
Another proposal is to increase the minimum height for balconies, which is currently at 1m to 1.5m, to discourage residents from throwing garbage out of their homes.
The authorities are looking to improve the safety in housing estates after 15-year-old S. Sathiswaran was killed by a falling chair thrown from a flat in PPR Seri Pantai on 15 January.
While the boy was already buried on 18 January, the police are still investigating to determine who threw the object out of a flat on the 21st floor.
Meanwhile, the proposed installation of additional safety measures in housing estates was announced during the unveiling of SkyWorld Quality Centre in SkyArena @ Setapak on Monday (22 January).
Built by SkyWorld Development Group, the 13,000 sq ft facility contains a home sales gallery that highlights the differences between residential properties with QLASSIC or CONQUAS-compliant finishing against non-compliant ones.
The Construction Industry Development Board’s (CIDB) Quality Assessment System for Building Construction Works (QLASSIC) gauges a property’s workmanship and is a mark of good quality.
“Our SkyWorld Quality Centre just received an 85 percent score by QLASSIC. I know many of you might think that with our stringent quality commitments, our homes will have zero defects but there is no such thing as zero defects,” said SkyWorld Development Group’s Founder Datuk and Group Managing Director Ng Thien Phing.
“What we can do is enforce quality checklists and minimise the defects so when you buy a SkyWorld home, you can be sure of our quality commitments,” he added.
