We Also Need Affordable Housing, says Middle-Class Johoreans

Middle-class Johoreans revealed that they will give their backing to a political party with inclusive plans to build more affordable housing not just for lower-income families, reported the Malay Mail Online.

“Basically, I consider myself in the middle-income group and not from the lower income (group), which has many incentives. To be honest, I feel trapped as there isn’t much choice,” said 31-year-old businessman CW Chow.

“With the general election coming, my support will go to a political party that can champion people like me and promise changes to improve housing issues for all segments of society.”

This is because landed home prices for new gated communities in Iskandar Puteri are “extremely high” like those in Taman Nusa Idam, Mutiara Rini, Taman Nusa Bayu and Medini.

“To be honest, the prevailing prices are not reflective of the current value of property. I may just pump back my savings into my business and continue to rent as the price of landed houses in the main residential areas of Iskandar Puteri is far from my budget of RM350,000,” noted Chow.

At present, average prices of two-storey linked house within the urban areas of Iskandar Puteri stands at around RM600,000. On the other hand, he considers affordable housing outside of the 402.96 sq km district as being too inaccessible.

Iskandar Puteri, which was previously part of the Johor Bahru Central Municipal Council, has undergone rapid development since 2010 thanks to the government’s efforts to boost the development of Kota Iskandar and its surrounding areas including Medini and the Forest City project.

Iskandar Puteri with Gelang Patah can now be considered as a city. While the high-density area of Skudai in district features several established housing areas, many of the existing residential properties there are old.

Meanwhile, Iskandar Puteri’s newer residential areas are Estuari, Nusa Duta, Bukit Indah, Nusa Indah, Nusa Bayu, Horizon Hills, East Ledang, Nusa Idaman, Nusa Bestari, Nusa Bestari 2, Ledang Heights, Bestari Heights, Taman Nusa Bestari Jaya and Sunway Iskandar.

Officially unveiled in 2007, Iskandar Puteri is one the five flagship zones of Iskandar Malaysia, an economic corridor spanning 550,000 acres that is three times the size of Singapore.
