Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will ultimately decide on Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) sale of 64 land parcels for a total of RM4.28 billion without an open tender, reported The Edge.
According to Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad, the taskforce reviewing the transactions will submit its list of recommendations on how to handle each deal to the Prime Minister
For some land sales, the taskforce is advising the government to scrap the agreement and refund the monies paid by the seller. “Some (deals) could be continued with improvement. There is also a recommendation to continue some as is,” he said during a Parliamentary session on Monday (6 August).
However, Khalid emphasised that the taskforce’s recommendations does not mean that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will stop its investigation on anomalous transactions involving government properties.
While MACC’s investigations are ongoing, Khalid said the Federal Territories Ministry intends to enhance DBKL’s land sales process.
“Its purpose is to ensure that future land sales would be more transparent and systematic and also in line with Kuala Lumpur’s development aspirations.”
Separately, Khalid reiterated that the Kuala Lumpur City Plan 2020 will be officially published later this year even though the authorities will only have two years to implement it.
He noted that the plan was already available in 2008 and was supposed to be published in April 2015 after undergoing public consultation and collection of relevant development data. However, the prior administration failed to gazette it.
Furthermore, the lessons learned from Kuala Lumpur City Plan 2020 will be used for a longer term vision for the capital. “The shortcomings will be reviewed thoroughly in the preparation of a structural plan for Kuala Lumpur City 2040,” he added.
