The construction of a semi-detached house in Taman Merak Mas, Durian Tunggal in Melaka drew much criticism as its design resembles that of a place of worship, reported The Star.
The house, which has been abandoned, features Taoist architecture and motifs.
According to Durian Tunggal assemblyman Mohd Sofi Abd Wahab, construction of the house began even before Alor Gajah Municipal Council’s (MPAG) letter on 12 December, which state that the house should not resemble a temple.
He noted that while MPAG has not stopped the building’s construction, it has asked the owner to change its design.
“MPAG should explain to the owner about the Uniform Building by-law 1984 which says it is forbidden to have a structure that resembles a place of worship in a housing area.”
Mohd Sofi revealed that details of the construction had already been forwarded to state Housing, Local Government and Environment committee chairman Datuk Tey Kok Kiew.
“We hope to resolve this matter amicably to preserve the harmony in Melaka that we are accustomed to,” he added.
