Residents of Taman Seri Perak Apartments were irked when the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) demolished some of their parking lot shelters and towed away the cars parked under them without prior notice.
MBPP enforcers towed some of cars from the front end only, effectively leaving the rear tires, which were locked by handbrakes, to be forcefully dragged on the road.
“It is irresponsible of MBPP. Couldn’t they have given a demolition notice so that residents would know not to park there?” asked 42-year old resident Loh Chun Siang, whose rear tyres became worn out at one portion only due to the towing.
Located off Jalan Perak, the 205-unit medium-cost apartment project was built in 1997, while the 360 parking shelters were built 17 years ago.
Malaysian United Party (MUP) women’s affairs bureau chairman Tan Sim Bee has called on the council to temporarily stop the demolition and provide some explanation to the residents.
“We hope the council will tell residents and the developer how the shelters were non-compliant,” she said.
“The residents want to know if the council will demolish all the other shelters. Please tell them in advance so that their cars won’t be dragged away with handbrakes on.”
Meanwhile, a council spokesman had admitted that they had failed to provide early notice to the residents to move their cars.
According to him, the shelters were demolished for safety reasons since they were built by the developer without the approval of the council.
“The zinc sheets could be blown off in a storm and cause harm,” he said.
