The government has announced that the upkeep of all roads serving Felda communities across the country will now be financed by money from the Malaysian Road Records Information System (Marris), reported The Star.
This was stated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak during the national-level Felda breaking fast event at Felda Sungai Sayong in Kota Tinggi that was attended by around 5,000 people.
This move was recommended by Datuk Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Chief Minister of Johor.
Notably, the state has 73 Felda settlements — the second highest number in the country. These are spread across 21 state assemblies and 13 parliamentary constituencies that contains 146,000 voters in total.
According to Mohamed Khaled, this funding set-up for roads in Felda communities is akin to how other village roads in Johor are maintained.
“Now there is no difference between other villages and Felda settlements as they now have ownership and even formed village development and security committees at the settlements.”
In addition, he revealed that the state government is dedicated to resolving the land ownership problems with about 3,500 settlers.
“We understand that this is not just a piece of land but also their history and the dignity of the settlers,” explained Mohamed Khaled.
The authorities are also expediting the process of giving out land titles, and since 2013, they have awarded this important document to 6,866 settlers.
Furthermore, he said that the state government has teamed up with the Federal Land Development Authority to create a special committee helmed by the Felda Chairman and two state executive councillors.
Its aim is to tackle problems being faced by Felda communities in Johor, particularly issues concerning housing, land ownership and infrastructure projects. One of these is housing issues for second generation Felda settlers being constructed by Syarikat Perumahan Negara.
