Residents living near The Address condominium that is currently being built in Taman Desa have alleged that Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has failed to act against the project’s developer and contractor after a crane in the construction site fell into the vicinity of the adjacent Tiara Faber condo on 23 January.
“The residents are now extremely disturbed by this incident,” said the Protect Taman Desa Coalition, a group of residents opposing the construction.
“To the residents, the site, the nature of the project and the pace of work have all the ingredients to an accident waiting to happen if due diligence and strict compliance with safety regulations are not enforced.”
The projects and its construction pose a hazard to nearby residents as its three towers are more than 30 storeys each. Aside from being built on a 132ft-wide land that is very narrow, the architectural setback on the walls is small.
Moreover, DBKL has allowed the developer to significantly increase the project’s population density from just 60 people per acre to 650 people per acre, which the residents vehemently disapprove.
Worse, the developer and contractor did not apologize to the residents of Tiara Faber condo for the crane collapse even if no one was hurt. Also, no one from the builder’s party came forward to discuss the repair costs for the small concrete structure damaged in the incident.
Fed-up with DBKL’s inaction and the lack of responsibility of the developer and contractor, around 130 residents living in the vicinity of the construction site such as those from the Desa 8 Condo, 1 Desa Residence and Tiara Faber Condo protested near The Address condominium.
They also submitted a letter to the Department of Occupational Safety and Health Malaysia (DOSH) calling for a stop work order until a full investigation in the crane collapse is completed.
They also want the authorities to do a thorough safety check of the construction site to prevent further mishaps, and punish those responsible for the accident.
Meanwhile, Seputeh MCA Vice Chairman Datuk Banie Chin has promised that he will relay the residents’ demands to Kuala Lumpur City Hall.
