Converting a space at a multi-storey carpark into food stalls and multi-purpose halls to student hostels is deemed illegal when it is done without the approval of the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ).
This was revealed during MPSJ’s monthly full board meeting, in which councillor Chang Kim Loong asked about the updates on the case of an apartment building in SS15, Subang Jaya that had repurposed facilities on the property without prior approval of the council.
MPSJ president Noraini Roslan said the developer’s action violates Section 70 of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974 (Act 133).
In January, two notices had been served to the developer, with an order to make a written explanation for their act, she said.
“Their response has been verbal so far, saying that they got the approval of their Joint Management Body (JMB) to do this,” she noted.
“They said the spaces were not being used anyway, so they are doing this in order to generate enough funds for the building’s maintenance.”
With this, Chang suggested setting up a task force to expedite the handling of the case in order that the council can take action against the developer in the event their written explanation is deemed inadequate.
