A top government official has promised that the properties and houses at Pengkalan in Ipoh that have suffered damages from the ongoing Papan 1 sewerage upgrading project will be repaired by the contractor.
“The appointed contractor will repair any damage, including roads and public utilities other than residential properties, at their own cost,” said Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri SK Devamany.
“But repair work will only be done after the project is completed because if repairs are carried out now, the properties could be damaged again from the ongoing construction.”
Hence, he is urging the affected residents to be patient. When the entire project is completed by 2021, about 1.5 million people in Kinta are expected to benefit from the upgraded sewerage system.
“The government is spending billions for the people’s sake, so do not worry, it is only a temporary inconvenience.”
At present, the sewerage project’s first phase is 62 percent complete. It involves constructing sewer pipes in Menglembu, Gunung Rapat and Ipoh’s city centre.
Phase II is expected to start in Q2 2018 and involves constructing a sewage treatment plant in Papan. The third phase will be a continuation of the first phase, wherein pipes built in Gunung Rapat will be improved so that it can cater to about 500,000 residents. All three phases are expected to be ready by 2021.
On Saturday (3 March), it was reported that 14 residents in Persiaran Pegoh Aman 2 in Taman Desa Aman have complained that the sewerage upgrading project has caused damages to their homes.
They said since construction work began in 2015, cracks have emerged on the floors, walls and concrete fences of their residential properties. The road nearest to the construction site also subsided by nearly one metre earlier this year.
“There are 14 houses that have been affected. I hope they can compensate everyone for the damage,” said 37-year-old factory worker Mohd Hazrul Mohd Noor Kamal, whose home was among those affected.
