KL Bicycle Lanes Safe to Use, Showed Audits

Pavither 1 Jun 2018

With the audits on the Kuala Lumpur bicycle lanes now completed, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) declared the cycle lanes safe for use.

This comes as the audits conducted by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Pertubuhan Ikram Malaysia showed that the “slip resistance value on the entire track is higher than the required level of 50”.

“So it is actually very safe,” Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Civil Engineering and Urban Transportation Department director Abdul Hamid Surip told EdgeProp.my.

He noted, however, that the safety of the 11.84km track can still be enhanced by undertaking some improvements, such as placing flexible poles along the track to separate bicycles and vehicles.

Areas where cycling tracks can be found on both right and left side of the road, such as the one-way Jalan Raja Laut, can have the cycling lanes re-routed to one side only.

“We will conduct a public survey and cycling associations to find out what else can be improved. The input will also help our future planning,” he said.

Meanwhile, DBKL mulls putting bicycle lanes in residential areas such as Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) and Wangsa Maju to help connect cyclist to the nearest transit station like the mass rapid transit (MRT) station.

The KL bicycle lanes were placed under the spotlight earlier this year after some considered its RM4 million implementation cost as too high.

Moreover, incidents involving motorcyclists running into the bicycle lanes’ separators saw DBKL committing to the tracks’ safety audit.
