The state government of Sarawak has been urged not to readily adopt industrialised building systems (IBS) in upgrading schools, particularly those located in rural areas, reported Bernama.
Pakatan Harapan Sarawak believes IBS is not feasible for schools in rural areas since different locations calls for different designs and would only lead to high transportation costs.
In fact, upgrading works using IBS had led to huge delays as well as damages to roads, said State Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Chong Chieng Jen.
“Progress works is 85 percent behind schedule and we also received complaints that these lorries plying materials for IBS materials damaged roads due to heavy load,” said Chong, who also serves as Stampin MP and Kota Sentosa assemblyman.

“I urge Datuk Seri Michael Manyin, the minister in-charge of education in Sarawak to look into the matter as he has been talking about upgrading of schools in the state.”
Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak last year announced that the government has set aside RM1 billion each for Sarawak and Sabah for the upgrade of their schools.
Meanwhile, Chong, on behalf of the registered co-owners of Ocean Beach Resort, had sent a letter to the Kuching Land and Survey Department head to appeal the dismissal of their application to renew the lease for a piece of land on Lot 176 Gading-Lundu Land District.
With the lease expiring on 31 December 2024, Chong noted that the resort, which had been operating on the land for more than 10 years, had contributed to the development of Sarawak’s tourism industry.
“This said land is only approximately 5.261 sq m and there is plenty of idle, undeveloped land nearby.” As such, the government has no reason not to renew the lease, he added.
