Ask people what comes to mind when they think of Penang and it will most likely be world-class cuisine, quirky street art and heritage-rich colonial buildings. Dig deeper into the iconic properties they believe define Penang and chances are that E&O Hotel will be near the top of those lists.
The first of the Sarkies Brothers’ legendary hotel collection in Asia, the imposing edifice that overlooks the Straits symbolises Penang at its most magnificent. Yet behind the world-renowned hotel brand is a group that has consistently delivered some of Malaysia’s most impressive properties over the last decade.
From boutique residences in the heart of Kuala Lumpur to master-planned projects on reclaimed lands, Eastern & Oriental Berhad has rightly gained a reputation as one of the region’s most innovative developers.
Indeed, developing a brand-new neighbourhood from scratch is no mean feat. That is however exactly what Eastern & Oriental Berhad successfully set out to do when it acquired Seri Tanjung Pinang back in 2003. Constructed on land reclaimed off the tip of Penang in the 1990s, the first 240-acre phase comprises clusters of luxury landed residences, high-end high-rise apartment, a five-star marina and the vast Straits Quay Marina retail complex.
One of the final additions to phase one is the highly anticipated upscale condo project The Tamarind. Spread across two towers, the 1,104 units are slated for completion in 2019. In the meantime, the project, which sits on almost seven acres of land, is not only attracting interest from investors but also the real estate experts who make up the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards (Malaysia) judging panel.
At the fifth annual event in April, the panel selected The Tamarind as the 2018 Best Condo Development (Penang) for its state-of-the-art facilities, bold design and location.
“Part of a world-class waterfront community created by Eastern & Oriental Berhad, The Tamarind, Seri Tanjung Pinang has been successfully designed to appeal to young professionals, with attractive lifestyle facilities and clean, contemporary furnishings and finishes,” the judges noted.
Onsite amenities at the project include The Waterscape, a spacious communal area comprising swimming pools, an outdoor playground and relaxation zones, in addition to a ‘Facilities Floor’ that boasts a jogging track, barbecue plaza and yoga centre. The two- and three-bedroom units, which start at 1,047 square feet, range in price from MYR630,000 to MYR1.92 million.
Beyond Penang, E&O also received a Highly Commended Best Luxury Condo (Klang Valley) and Best Landed Development (Iskandar) categories for The Mews KLCC – a joint venture with Mitsui Fudosan Group – and AVIRA Medini, respectively.
“We are grateful for the commendations that The Mews and Avira have received, and thank our partners for their support, commitment and trust in us,” sales and marketing senior general manager Wayne Wong said upon receiving the trophy.
