Most States In Peninsular Malaysia Sees Higher Construction Cost In July 2021

Most states in Peninsular Malaysia registered an increase in construction costs last month, according to data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

The Building Material Cost Index (BCI), excluding steel bars, for almost all regions within Peninsular Malaysia increased by between 0.6% and 1.5% for almost all categories of buildings in July from the previous month, revealed DOSM.

Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin noted, however, that region C (Selangor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Kuala Lumpur) and region D (Johor) saw the BCI declined by between 0.1% and 0.7% for almost all building categories, reported Bernama.

“Meanwhile, the BCI in Kota Kinabalu increased by between 0.3 and 4.8% for almost all categories of building except for timber piling, which decreased by 0.3%, while the BCI in Sandakan increased slightly by between 0.1 and 0.2% for almost all building categories,” he said.

The BCI in Kuching increased by between 0.4% and 1.5% for almost all categories of building, while Miri witnessed the BCI climb by 0.1% for five-storey and above (RC) building (for office) as well as five-storey and above (RC) building (for accommodation).

Including steel bars, the BCI for almost all regions within Peninsular Malaysia grew by between 1.3% and 3% for almost all categories of buildings, said Mohd Uzir.

Region C (Selangor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Kuala Lumpur) and D (Johor) posted a decrease of between 0.1% and 0.7% for almost all building categories.

“The BCI in Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan increased by between 0.1% and 4.7% for almost all categories of building except for timber piling, which decreased by 0.3% in both regions as well as timber building in Sandakan (-0.1%),” he said as quoted by Bernama.

Tawau registered a decline of between 0.1% and 0.3% for almost all categories of building, while Kuching recorded a slight increase of between 0.4% and 1.3%.

He added that Miri also posted an uptick of 0.1% for two- to four-storey (RC) building (flat roof).
