Guilt Laden Developer to Repair Damaged Homes

10 Oct 2017

A company building a 23-storey office tower along Magazine Road in George Town, Penang has promised to repair the damage caused by their construction on nine nearby houses.

According to Tanjong MP Ng Wei Aik, nine of the 14 homes along a lane off Noordin Street were impacted by the construction of the office building.

“Damage appeared after construction of the office suite building began two years ago.”

Aside from cracks on the ground where water seeps through during heavy rain, fissures also emerged on some houses’ walls and roof tiles that were caused by vibration from the piling works for the office building.

He said it’s important to repair these semi-wooden houses as they are more than 100 years old. Nevertheless, the developer has pledged to carry out the repairs this month.

“I will be monitoring the repairs to make sure they are done properly. I hope the developer will provide a one-year warranty on the repairs in case any further issues arise.”

“I will be writing to the Penang Island City Council to ask them to request the one-year warranty as they will be issuing the Certificate of Completion and Compliance for the development.”

Ng also revealed that the company is constructing a wall to prevent water from flowing from the building to the houses, which are located on lower elevation.

But more measures need to be done to safeguard the houses, he said, adding that the construction of the office building is expected to be completed by end-October.

One of the residents, 67-year-old Chuah Poh Cheng said that before the construction of the high-rise office tower, there were no damages to their homes.

“After construction began, cracks appeared on my floor and water seeped out when there is heavy rain. I hope once the damage is fixed, there will be no more problems,” she added.
