Businessman Sam Wong constantly fear for the safety of his family as there had been many cases where cars had collided head-on with their gate wall after driving recklessly through a bend near his home at Jalan Kledang, Menglembu.
In fact, there had been seven major accidents there since 2014, with the latest one happening on 16 November 2017.
“Last week, a vehicle knocked my car which was parked outside my house at about 1.30am and the driver fled the scene,” said Wong, who is particularly concerned over the safety of his elderly mother.
He narrated that they have been living in the house for the past three decades, but the frequent vehicular collisions started occurring three years ago, when motorists began using the road after exiting the Ipoh-Lumut Highway. By his estimates, about 1,000 cars ply this route daily.
He even installed “barriers” in front of his house in the form of his car and an old concrete pillar so that incoming motorists would drive carefully and slowly. “But these measures proved futile, as both my car and the pillar were rammed into.”
“I have lodged seven police reports over the matter and have complained to the Ipoh City Council as well. The council wrote to me in September that they would construct a hump, place signage, and improve lighting in the area, but all this will only be done next year,” he said.
Given the recurring road mishaps and the fact that lives are at stake, Wong is imploring the authorities to address this problem immediately.
“This is not just about my family or my house. It is about the safety of the people walking, driving and living in the vicinity,” Wong added.
According to Parti Sosialis Malaysia Batu Gajah Coordinator K. Segar, who is helping Wong on this issue, they have already sent a letter to the city council urging them to act with haste and not wait until 2018.
“We will wait two weeks for their reply, and if we do not hear from them, we have no choice but to meet with the mayor.”
