Penang Gov’t Showcases Proposed LRT

24 Jul 2017

The state government of Penang has started showcasing some of the details of the proposed light rail transit (LRT) that will connect Bayan Lepas with Komtar, reported The Star.

The public exhibits are being held in 10 different locations in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. It began last Wednesday (19 July) and will run until 17 August.

According to Chow Kon Yeow, Chairman of Penang’s Committee on Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation, the exhibits include the LRT’s Environment Impact Assessment (EIA).

Overall, they are showcasing three reports, namely the summary, main report and appendices of the rail network planned under the RM27 billion Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP).

“The proposed LRT channel is our priority project under the PTMP. Once the approval from the Federal Government is obtained, it will be a major step towards improving the public transport system and alleviating traffic congestion on the island,” he said.

If the public has any query or comment regarding the proposed LRT, they are advised to submit their written feedback to the Department of Environment (DoE) in Putrajaya before September 2.

The state government of Penang and its consultant will reply to all questions and feedback, and this will be incorporated in the EIA report for the LRT project.

“Obtaining approval for the EIA report from DoE is one of the preconditions required by the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) for its consideration in approving the railway scheme,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Chow revealed that the commission is considering to include the PTMP into its transport master plan for the region. “However, it will only be finalised in the first quarter of 2018.”

After getting SPAD’s conditional approval, Penang’s state government will hold another exhibit regarding the particulars of the LRT’s alignment, including its stations.

“So, the whole process will take about another year or more after going through many steps,” he added.

Furthermore, the EIA report can be viewed at the websites of the DoE and the state government. It is also available at ere.com.my/bllrt and pgmasterplan.penang.gov.my.
