With the help of Kelana Jaya MCA chairman Yap Yun Fatt and Subang Jaya MCA coordinator Maj (Rtd) Chong Ah Watt, PJS 7 residents in Bandar Sunway delivered a complaint on homes being converted into student hostels to the office of Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) president Noraini Roslan.
Yap also secured an appointment for a meeting between the residents and Noraini, reported The Star.
The residents had sought the help of MCA due to MPSJ’s lack of action on their long-standing complaint on student hostels within their area. Notably, they have raised the issue since 2013.
“She was a planner in a council before, so she knows all the dos and dont’s. I hope she will take time to look at this issue again and address this matter fairly,” Yap said.
He noted that while the residents have no problem with homes being rented, they feel that the renting of 10 rooms per house and extensive renovations do not seem right.
“People are converting residential homes for business gain but it is unfair to the other residents there,” said Chong.
Demand for student accommodation within the neighbourhood was high due to its close proximity to an international university, explained a resident who wanted to be identified only as Singh.
With this, several terrace houses within the area had undergone extensive renovations to add 10 bedrooms or more.
The increased number of bathrooms had raised the risk of dengue as there are now more Aedes mosquito breeding grounds, said Singh, who had previously contracted dengue.
Since many students have their own cars, residents experience difficulty in parking their vehicles. The congestion also made it hard for emergency vehicles such as fire engines and ambulances to pass.
Other issues raised by the residents include rowdy or unruly behaviour of some students, increased security risks, damage to houses due to renovation works and potential fire hazards.
“Some residents have sold their houses and left the area because they cannot stand it any longer,” revealed Singh.
